Promise Scholarship Program

The Promise Scholarship Program was started to encourage younger students to set their sights on a college education.

Nominations of sixth graders are sought from elementary teachers for students who have shown promise and potential but may not be the top students in the class. Scholarships are given to these students, not necessarily as a reward for outstanding achievement, but as an incentive and motivation to stay in school, do their best, and start thinking about education beyond high school as an attainable goal.

"I'd like to be a doctor someday. I'm happy I got the B.E.S.T. scholarship because it gives me something to work towards."

Zachary Jose
Cedarcrest Jr. High Student

"The scholarship was more than just financial support, it was the school saying, 'Congratulations, we're behind you.'"

Meredith Barnes
Former Spanaway Lake Teacher

At least one student  is selected from each of the district's 15 elementary schools and awarded a $500 scholarship that will be held "in escrow" until the student graduates from one of Bethel's high schools.

In 2006 the Promise Scholars attended a "I'm Going to College" Day at Pacific Lutheran University in May. These sixth graders were treated to a full day of college experiences on-campus, including a special science lecture, lunch in the cafeteria, and a back-pack full of goodies.
